1) I want to take of the engine cover and repaint and re-decal. How much of a pain is this? The paint and decal are chipping off and I'd just like to get the decal off and do whatever I need to do (pressure wash or suggestions on getting the existing decal off?) and then repaint and re-apply a similar decal. I haven't been able to find the right paint or a replacement decal. Am I getting over my head here - or is this as easy as it seems to be?

2) I've got a this motor on a 16' Crestliner fish/ski and it runs great. However, at WOT the boat is nearly impossible to turn to the right. At lower speeds the steering has no problem going right or left. As you increase speed it gets more and more difficult to turn right. Any ideas there? The previous owner said he was having problems turning both ways and replaced the cable (not the actual rotary system that the steering wheel connects to).

Should I just replace the whole thing with a new teleflex system or it supposed to difficult to turn right at WOT with an outboard?

Thanks!

Hi Ken

I repainted my 91 70 HP rude and it came out real well. I used the paint in the link below. I went to home depot and got myself some spray on paint remover. Worked great on the decals and the paint. Spray it on, hose it off. Then sand out the hood, prime it and paint it...

foreandaftmarine.com/TEMPOENGINEPAINT.htm

awesome - thanks.

Were you able to find the replacement decals or did you just leave them off?

I've found a couple on eBay and some from very old engines but nothing that's similar to what it shipped from the factory with.

Thanks!

I found a guy on Ebay who does custom decals. Can't think of his name right now, but he does great work. I will look for it in a bit and if find it, I will post it... There are a bunch of them on Ebay, though...

OK, so I grabbed that paint...

I got all the old paint/decals off - primed it and painted it with the new stuff. Looks good...

However, it doesn't quite have the 'shininess' that the old paint job had (well, what was left of it).

It seems like I might be missing a clear coat or something that goes on top that seals it up and gives it a nice shiny look. The paint can says that it's engine paint so I'm assuming that since the engine cover is plastic that it's finishing properly?

Any ideas??

Yeah Ken, I forgot to mention the clear coat. A couple coats will make it look good...Mine is not as shiny as factory, but pretty close...
