Should be a decal on the starboard side of motor on the lower cowl saying "Mfd. in_____". Maybe yours fell off?...

There is a "decal" on the starboard side that lists the engine family#, idle speed, spark plug type and gap, required gas octane rating, etc. , but doesnt show any date on it ? Is that the decal you're referring to ?? I dont see any other decals on the starboard or port( other than the one on port that lists ser# and the code "G" ) I recently bought this as "new", but I'm beginning to wonder.

My 1999 90C has a decal on the starboard side that says; Date Mfg. 1/99but maybe they changed it since then, but you'd think they would have the date of manufacture somewhere on the motor? Are you not sure what year your motor was built?

Yes, you're right , I don't know when it was built. It's a model 90TLR, but I've looked everywhere on it for a tag that has the date it was built, I don't see such a tag anywhere. It was sold as new, looked new, but runs rather poorly at idle. I've owned a lot of 2 strokes, none have run this rough. I'm real puzzled about the manufacture date.

90TLR, indicates it was made after 2005.
the date code is on the stbd bracket.

If it's running/idling rough then may be water/dirt/junk in carbs and need cleaning. If that motor has been sitting around the boat dealership for a year or more then the carbs could have some plugged jets from old fuel. That motor should run like a top and if jets are plugged creating a lean fuel mixture it can damage the pistons. Since it's a "new" motor maybe the dealer would clean carbs for you at no charge? Good luck and let us know what you find!

Code g at the end of the model means 1988

Hey, thanks for those replies. RODBOLT - there is no decal or plate of any type on the stbd. bracket - I'm sure you're correct - there should be one there probably. The owner's manual that I was given actually specifically shows there shold be a "date of mfg." tag on the port bracket, but there is only a tag on the port showing the model # and serial # , no date at all is illustrated on that tag. I'm really wondering about this "new" engine.

Re: 90 hp 2-stroke, date of manufacture?

Best guess without a decal, tag or label is that it's a "new" 2009 motor, since Yamaha stopped importing the 2 stroke motors into the USA the first of this year. That's a very good motor and after you get the minor running issues(probably dirty carbs) cleared up, you'll be good to go for years. If you don't have a fuel/water separator on the fuel line, it would be a very good idea to install one. Good luck and keep us posted!

Isn't there some type of "requirement" ( and I'm not a big govt. type of person) for the manufacturer to display the manufactured date somewhere on this type of equipment ??

Re: 90 hp 2-stroke, date of manufacture?

for engines yamaha imported after 2005 the 3 alpha charcters gave information on electric or mnual, trim and tilt or manual and shaft length.
on 2005 and older US imports the alpha charcters were 4 characters and the 4th gave year model information.
2006 and up had a date code tag on the stbd transom bracket.
you can also have a yamaha dealer look up the date by the engine PID.
on engines imported to the US after 1998 there is also an EPA decal on the port lower engine pan that gives date of manufcture information.
only exceptions are some of the early 1980's motors that were labeled AETO or BETO and some of the V6 speacial and excell engines from the mid 80's.
dirty carbs or trash in the fuel is typically not a warrenty item by Yamaha cause its not a product defect.

RODBOLT - when you say " port lower engine pan " , you're talking about inside the cowling ? for example - just under what engine component ?

I see a rectangular area on the starboard bracket where a tag could be affixed, but no tag is there.

Re: 90 hp 2-stroke, date of manufacture?

RODBOLT - additional info . - Please Reply

Here's all the I.D. info. I'm seeing on this motor:

Port Engine Bracket : 90TLR
6H L 1044064
G
Starbd. Engine Bracket : ( clean rectangular spot for tag, nothing affixed )

Starbd. Engine Pan : 68804
Y 1

Port Engine Pan : ( don't see anything )

**With this engine and dealer, I'm at the Verify stage of: Trust but Verify **

thanks for your help
( is there a Yamaha ph# to call if you aren't able to help define engine age)??

Thanks
