Hello;
I have a 1983 Chrysler 90 HP outboard motor that does not want to start, unless I use starting spray in both the carberators to get it going. The motor sat for 4 to 5 years, while I had two little girls, and now I am ready to take the boat out but the motor will not start correctly. Once it is running it seems to lack power until it is is warmed up, but then seems to run ok. I replaced the plugs to no avail. It used to start just fine, years ago. I know little about the mechanics of the engine. The motor has about 85 hours on it. Are there points underneath the magneto spinning on top of the motor? And could that be the problem, old points that need to be replaced. IF so, how difficult is it to remove it to get to the points.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Matt

Matt any motor sitting that long will need to have the carbs cleaned and water pump impeller replaced. Carbs will need to be completely disassembled, soaked over night in cleaner than blow all passages out with compressed air and reassembled. As for the points I'm not familiar with your motor someone should be along to answer that soon. Hope this helps Good Luck. :)

Re: 90 HP CHRYSLER OUTBOARD RUNNING PROBLEM

Thanks for the quick reply, MurdockJr. Do you think then that the motor is not getting fuel, because the carbs are clogged up? I was thinking that while running it, that it was starving for fuel, and that was why it would die several times before I could get it to run continuously. I did clean out the float bowls, and they seemed to be fairly clean. Would it be possible for me to just run carb cleaner through the gas, or could the carb cleaner damage the motor?

Also, if someone knows if this motor has points or electronic ignition I would greatly appreaciate the info. If it has points I am sure they need to be replaced by now.

Thanks,
Matt

Just to add to what MurdockJr said, My Chrysler manual says to soak the carb(disassembled) in gasoline. But, it's a manual for a '70 Chrysler. You might also want to replace fuel pump diaphragm. Parts are available at NAPA. The Seloc manual says it uses a Champion UL19V plug. It also says that it has a distibutor with a breakerless ignition. The timing is 32 BTDC.

Could very well be starving for gas because of crud in the jets, or a weak fuel pump. Running carb cleaner thru the gas won't do anygood, that is more of a preventative measure. Any varnish build up or a grain of sand will cause problems.

Carbs should be cleaned in method described.
Then do a compression check, and a thorough decarb process on the engine. Replace the fuel filter, and the fuel pump diaphram, and check all fuel lines for leaks. And change the impeller, as stated above.

With these step done, most motors with new owners, or motors that are being put back into service, will run pretty well. Then if you still have troubles, you will know that the basic maintenance has been done and you can narrow down the source of the troubles.
