Hey folks. I just wanted to report back on my tribulations with a poor firing motor.
After a few hours of checking things and fixing small problems and potential problems, I determined that the power pack on the port bank was faulty. A new one was ordered and installed. The boat was splashed with anticipation of nice cruise with a good working motor.... Hmmmm this thing works like crap. It wouldn't run well at all at lower rpms and was drinking fuel like it was a frat boy on friday night. turned out to be loose welsh plugs over the low speed jets. New welsh plugs were installed and the boat was dunked again. With baited breath I idled out to deep water and pushed the throttle down.... A spectacular holeshot was the result. the old bathtub never worked so good, it lept up on plane and topped out at at 47 mph. Not bad for an old boat with a paper towel paint job and a dirty bottom.
Thanks for all of your input and wisdom. Iboats saved my summer!
P.S. I recently picked up a 70 hp evinrude triple, its about the same vintage as my 90 hp (86) are there any interchangable parts on these two motors? the 70 hp ventilated the base with the big end of a connecting rod so the powerhead is an anchor but the bottom end is supposed to be fairly new.

Good to hear you found the problem, off the top of my head I can't say for sure about the compatibility between the two but you can look up the lower units for both at http://shop2.evinrude.com/ and compare part numbers.

I'd just like to thank you for coming in and explaining the problem and solution you found. A lot of people seem to get their problem fixed that then just disappear.

Thanks! :D

the prop may fit, and some screws here and there....doubt much else will interchange:redface:

did you find gas leaking out of that plug....

seems someone either took the previous plug out pretty clumsily or they put the new one in that way...
