Hey guy?s looking for a little help on replacing the water pump impeller and upper housing on my 86 90hp inline6 OB (AKA Tower of Power). Going into my 3rd season owning this boat and haven?t changed the pump and doubt if the PO changed it either. Noticed last weekend at low RPM?s it barely pee?s, higher RPM it pee?s like a champ. I?ve looked though past posts and have a Seloc manual. This is my first attempt at this operation and the manual has me a little intimidated. The statements of heating the prop shaft and using a punch and hammer to align the shift shafts seem harsh. I?ve read place the shifter in neutral and forward (Which one). I purchased the Merc pump kit and it seems to have a lot of pieces, I assume this kit covers a variety of installations. Correct? Any gotcha?s I should look out for or I?m I just making this out worse than it is. Sorry for the long winded post. Thanks

Re: 90 hp inline6 H2o pump help

heating the prop shaft? Never heard of that one... lol.. this is an easy process. ( i have a 115 inline).
Step 1: put the lower in NEUTRAL... do not put it in forward.. i have no idea where people get that. The reason for neutral is that it is the only position where the shift shaft is locked in place, well i suppose reverse is as well, but use neutral.

Step 2: loosen nuts and bolts, there should be 3 nuts on the back side of the lower, two nuts on the bottom of the cavitation plate, and one bold that is accessed when you take off the trim tab.

Step 3, remove lower (duh) i use a floor jack with a rubber pad on it if i am doing this alone.

step 4: the tiny shaft in the back of the lower is the shift shaft, it will have a black plastic cam on it.. DO NOT TOUCH THE CAM OR SHAFT.. if that cam falls off.. well... just dont let it happen, its a large pain in the rear.

step 5: grease the main driveshaft ( i normally use lower unit lube)

Step 6: remove bolts that hold the plastic upper pump houseing in place and remove the housing (if the housing and gaskets are in good shape, you can reuse them, if not, replace both.

Step 7: slide the old impeller off the shaft.
Note: there is a small key that holds the impeller in place on the shaft.. don't lose it.

step 8: slide new impeller onto shaft, replace the gaskets, then replace the upper housing, it also makes it more easy to put the new impeller on if you grease the inside surface of the housing.
IMPORTANT: while forcing the the upper housing back down, turn the drive shaft CLOCKWISE, this will put the right orientation and spin on the impeller, as well as make it possible to get the housing back over the new impeller.

Step 9: put the lower back on the boat... now this is a pain for the first timer, both shafts have to line up, a small screwdriver makes it easier to get the shift shaft to line up.

Step 10: NEVER EVER EVER run the motor without water getting to the pump EVER.. an impeller will be toast in the matter of seconds...

Store time:
I had a BRAND NEW impeller on my 115 last summer. I have this habbit that i got from my grandfather that i ALWAYS run my boat motor before heading out to the lake, just to make sure that it will start when i get to the ramp: i think of it as a courtesy to others at the ramp. Well this particular afternoon i was in a big hurry (i do not recall why) so i hooked up the muffs, turned on the water, started the engine and ran inside to change clothes. I came out a few minutes later to find NO water coming out of the tell-tale or prop. What happened? Well.. this is when i used the stock power trim on the motor (has since been replaced with a cmc unit) and this power trim, being 30 years old sagged... Well i trimmed up the motor a little, put on the muffs and left.. the motor sagged... the muffs hit the transom, and pushed them forward passed the water pickup holes on the lower. Moral of the Story: NEVER get in a hurry while working on a boat, and NEVER leave a running boat unintended. And you thought you had a long post, HA!

Re: 90 hp inline6 H2o pump help

I kinda thought I was over thinking this.
Another question. Is the shift shaft 2 pieces? If it is, when I drop the LU does the upper portion just hang there? Or is it 1 piece and I have to disconnect something inside the cowl.

it is 2 pieces, and yes the top portion will just hang there. I want to add to this, use marine grease for the driveshaft, and cover your impeller with Vaseline- some say it helps extend the life of your impeller. (lubrication and helps so the plastic won't dry out as fast)

Thanks for the advice and story time. I plan on performing surgery Saturday so I'll let you know how it goes. Another question, is there a way to install a temp gauge. First boat I've owned that doesn't have one or should I not worry about it. Just remember always watching the gauge on a 140 OMC IO in a Grady I had.

instal a water pressure gauge rather than a water temp gauge on an outboard. They are easy, just tap into the tell-tale hose.

Hmm OK. Pressure gauge, I'll look into that.

We had Success with the pump!!! A friend and I changed it in about 2 hours. Even fixed the speedo while we were at it. My only concern is there doesn?t seem to be anything to secure the plastic tube on top of the pump housing. One end is snug in the pump housing and the other end just slides up around the pipe coming down from the power head. What?s to stop it from vibrating loose? Other then the tube question I think I?m good to go.

Mine slides up to the powerhead pickup as well, i have good water flow, i wouldnt be too concerned about it. Just run it and make sure it is flowing a good amount of water. It will be easier to tell when you get a pressure gauge as well.

That plastic tube is simply a guide to help you mate the copper water tube to the pump. After the gearcase is installed, it has no function, so it doesn't matter if it moves.

OK. SWEET!!! A hugh thanks for the help. You guys are awesome! I lied about the not having any more questions though. What are the recommended spark plugs for this engine? She has NGK's now but I wanta replace em.

Side note - Instead of Vaseline, I lightly coated the impeller with dish soap. Made it nice and slippery and I figured the soap would get flushed out. I've heard petroleum grease could damage the rubber of the impeller... Worked for me. Ran it with muff's after I got everything back together then hit the lake about 2 hours after that.

dish soap sounds like a great idea. Stick with the NGK's. BUHW, they look funny, surface gap.
