90 HP Johnson How Fast?

I have a 1984 90 hp Johnson mounted on a 1990 17ft Alumacraft MV Maverick Bass Boat. I was wondering how fast it should go? I had My Dad (170lb), Myself (170lb), and My Son (60lb), in the boat with a few fishing poles and tackle boxes and the live wells were empty and the hull was empty of any water. At WOT I was turning about 5600rpms so it would seem that my prop would be sized about right, but I was only doing about 40mph. Don't get me wrong I think this is fast enough but I would have thought that it would be much faster. I know of other people with simular setups with smaller HP moters example: 40hp evinrude and they can do about the same speed. With my given setup is this normal or does it sound like something is not right. I have even been told that I have way too much motor for that size boat?? Any thoughts?

How would I get into where I could see under the power head to tell if I have an exhaust leak?
