Had my boat engine checked out to make sure everything was alright because I had someone interested in buying my boat.. The shop called and said I only have 84 PSI compression on cylinder #3. They also said the cylinder walls were scored up pretty bad..

Their only solution was a new powerhead for about $2200.00 plus labor to tear down and install.. I figure I can get the block bored and order a new set of pistons and rings and be fine, i know enough people that work on engines to round up ring compressors and other tools common to engine rebuilds.

After some research here I suspect long term lugging of the engine may have caused it but im not 100% sure. The boat never had a tach, so I don't know what kind of RPM's i've been turning in the 2 years i've owned the boat. I also don't know how hard the engine was run on a regular basis by the Previous Owner..

On a typical day I would go out, crank up the engine, let it warm up and putter out of the no wake zone... I would throttle it up to maybe half or 3/4 and cruise out to the sand bar or to my fishing spot. Occasionally I would run wide open to the marina to meet someone or the family, and when the family got on board we would do more of the same.. Sometimes we would pull a tube where the engine did get run wide open for a good while.

Does this sound like coking was my problem???? What else do i need to look for!

Re: 90 Hp Johnson Seahorse Rebuild

there can be several reasons, running lean on one carb, etc. lugging is not going to help it. but lugging is not running slow. lugging is not having the engine propped correctly at wide open throttle, so that when running slow it is not over working.

i would do a major decarb, and see if the compression changes. if it doesn't, then you do you fix it. or do you sell it, and let the buyer fix it.

Thanks for the clarification TD, The guys at the shop led me to believe that the rings in #3 may be gone or there was some serious scoring on the piston walls... When I go pick her up i'll talk with them in some more detail.. I'll also try decarbing and see where we go from there!
