Hi All,

I recently bought a 1982 Mercury inline 6 (90hp model). The original owner told me that when it comes to winterizing, these motors are really easy to do. He mentioned all they typically stuff .... gear lube, fuel stabilizer and fogger. But he also said all that was necessary to drain the water out of them was to drop the leg down and all the water would drain. Is this true or am I gonna be leaving water in the motor/pump etc.

If there is drain plugs under the cowling could someone tell me how to locate them and where/ how many I could expect to find.

Thanks,
Brad.

Re: 90 hp merc winterize: draining water

Outboards are self draining. Stand it vertically and any water will drain by itself. Be sure to change the lower unit lub if you live where it can freeze. Fronzen water breaks things so you want to have fresh lub in the lower unit. If the lub comes out looking like a light colored chocolate shake, water has made its way inside. Replace the O-rings or gaskets on the drain and vent plugs when you change the lub. Then keep an eye on it next season. If water is still getting in, the lower unit needs to be re-sealed.

A few rotations of the engine, either with a rope on the flywheel, or with the starter, will enable any water still in the pump to drain out. Make sure the ignition is disabled when you do this. An 82 should have a lanyard switch on the control box.

no drains plugs on that engines cooling systwm
