I have a 2010 Mercury, 90 HP. When I start it up I can drive it about half a mile and then it sputters and quits. I thought fuel filters, so I replaced both inline filters. High and low pressure, same result. It will start again the next day and do the same thing. Today I noticed (and I don't know how I missed it before) that the foam air filter had totally deteriorated, I don't see any of it anywhere. After investigating online further I notice that this has happened to many others with the same stock foam filter, but they all say they never had a problem from it. I don't know how long this has been missing, but am wondering if it could be the problem and what I should do next? Any help would definitely be appreciated.

Thanks
Don

I am late here but one suggestion is to make sure that the vent on the gas cap or fuel tank is open, just loosen the cap to test. With efi it is possible that the fuel pump is quitting when it gets hot. Without some basic info like does it have spark and does squirting a little fuel/oil mix in the carb have any effect or if the spark plugs are wet or otherwise look bad then it would be hard to say more.

It does not have a fuel cap per se, it's just a flap and it ok. Yes, it has spark, it starts.
