Well, now that i've had a chance to run my old merc on the water a few times, i can see how well the motor runs.
Motor always works, always starts up, and i can easily accelerate quickly, and reach top speed.
Top speed of the boat seems to be arounds 32 mph with 2 people, and 25 with 7-8 people. This is with the water pressure speedo, sorry don't have a gps. Motor speed is arounds 5500 rpm at full throttle. It also depends on how much it is trimmed, but 5500 seems to be the max, at 32 mph. I would assume with my trihull bowrider these figures seem normal?
A few questions about the driveability of the merc.
Sometimes getting off from a start, it leaves quite a puff of bluish smoke. It doesn't happen very often, but it will once in a while. Seems totally random. I figure that since its a 2 stroke motor, it might be normal. Otherwise, it burns pretty clean.
This might be related, but i'm not sure. It runs a bit rough sometimes. you especially notice a missing at 1000-3500 rpm, but at top rpm, the engine is pretty smooth, but it just seems the engine is constantly missing in that range. I know this merc has a rough idle, which i'm told is normal, but seems this engine is ready for a good once over. Carbs have never been touched, as well, as the wires. I'm not really complaining about it much, as long as the engine gets me through till winter..
Its a 1988 90 HP, 3 cylinder 2 stroke merc. It has electronic ignition, oil injection. Thats about all i know about it.
