Can anyone please give me some tips on going though my powerhead.I have a few questions.I would like nothing more than to take it to a shop but I just cannot afford it.so I'm going to attempt to find my problem.[noise] slight knocking noise engine runs great but at idle it has a high pitch taping sound when reved up seems to get quiet.so I bought the merc manual for this 2003 90 hp and am going to remove the power head.now for some questions
if I have a bad piston can I replace the piston and reuse all other bearings.should I replace all pistons considering the cyl walls are ok. should I scrap the conn rod bolts and get new ones, can I remove the head cover to see into cyls without removing the powerhead. Please any suggestions would be apriciated
Thanks You

Re: 90 hp outboard pwerhead questions,

You need to find out what is wrong before you plan on replacing a piston.
You might have piston slap or you might have a rod knock.
Disassemble and inspect the parts as you go. Look for wear and burning. Measure surfaces and compare to published specs.
Replace all the bearings no matter what you find. Also replace all the rings, don't use any old ones. Hone the cylinders.
If you find a rod bearing bad have the rod resized and the bolts replaced. The crank may be a problem.
