New to outboards and trying to resolve some issues with my "new" 1997 Evinrude 90 HP. It is a E90TSLEU SPL with no VRO.

Should this model have a overheat alarm buzzer?

Does it/should it have "limp mode" ?

Does it even have a thermostat? I can't find one in the parts listings - maybe looking in the wrong place.

Re: 90 HP Question

Yes, it has overheat alarm, the horn (buzzer) is in the remote control box. There is a temperature switch in each cylinder head with a tan wire coming out of it. Test horn by unplugging the tan wire at connector near temp switch and ground the side going to the remote control. With the key on, engine off, the horn should sound continously while the wire is grounded. Test both sides.

I think it has "SLOW" mode which limits RPM when overheated. The system won"t reset until the engine is shut off even if it cools down once activated.

It has 2 thermostats in the same housing, lower rear of engine. Look for the water hoses coming from the thermostat housing. They are a pain in the neck to change due to the location and the lower cowling makes it difficult. They are shown in the "Midsection" section of the parts catalog.

Re: 90 HP Question

What kjdunne said... I've run this same 1997 Evinrude 90 SPL on an 18ft Center Console boat, in both salt and fresh water. Mine has proven to be a great, reliable motor. Parts are available here on iboats as well as other places. When I can't find something I need locally, I usually use This web site.

Feed it good gas, good 50:1 oil, and some reasonable care and maintenance and she will not let you down!
