Hello,

I have a 1992 90 hp Force. What type of fluid do I use to fill the tilt and trim? I have ordered a manual but it will not get here for a few days.

I assume you add the fluid at the side of the trim cylynder and fill it up until it is level with the top of the hole.

Thanks,

Cj

Top it off with whatever is in there.
If it is motor oil, put in some 10w-30.
If it looks like transmission fluid, use that.

NO NO NO 10w30 is not used!!!!

Go find some 30 Wt non detergent or you will have leakdown problems!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IF the fluid is red then use auto tranny fluid.

My manual says 10w40 or type F, FA, or dexron II trans fluid.
One or more of my pumps is labeled for 10w30.
Never heard of leakdown problems caused by the fluid.

Can you elaborate?

I use the 10w40 and have used for a number of years with no leakage.

Re: 90 Hp trim/tilt fluid

there are internal variations that cause some designs to behave differently than others. This is why some people say xxx or it will leak and others say yyy works fine for them.

The most dramatic difference is the tilt cylinder between chrysler and mercury. I test the systems for bleed down with a cinder block tied to the end of a 4 foot iron shaft which the systems are supposed to hold for 24 hours. The chrysler systems will hold this load for days/weeks/months without bleed down. The mercury revised version looks identical on the outside but can't hold the load ... ever. actually, it can't even lift the test load. If you have a 1991 or later system with the classic prestolite tilt/trim/shock then you should use 30W or higher ND. The mercury design is already on the brink of failure when new. Thicker fluid helps resolve the problem.

Either way, the really important thing is not the viscosity of the oil but the non-detergent. If you use a detergent oil it will shorten the life expectancy of your TnT system. 30W ND is best because it is thick and you can get it from any local hardware or auto store.
