1998 Yahama 2 stroke. We shifted into neutral did the impeller and it bolted right up. Now motor will not shift into forward or reverse. I read somewhere that both lower unit and shifter should be in reverse. Any help would be appreciated

Remove lower unit and see if it can be shifted using a pair of pliers on the lower shift rod.

did you make sure the shift shaft lined up with the top part as you put the lower unit back on?
bottom part will not turn if they are not hooked up to each other.
it you moved the shift shaft while the lower unit was off , you will need to take it back off and make sure both in neutral or the same gear before reinstalling.

We are removing it today. Both were in neutral and when we put it back together. The shifter wil go into all three positions forward, neutral and reverse but lower unit stays in neutral. Not the easiest thing to work on. Pontoon boat has no trailer we are working on it in the lake. Will know more after this weekend

Thanks guys. We got it fixed. When we installed it last week the splines on the drive shaft and power head did not line up so we rotated the lower unit until they lined up. doing this pushed the linkage out of the way instead of having them mate. We did this similar however once the splines were aligned we lowered the lower unit a couple of inches and then re attached. All good now.
