'90 Johnson 120 Oil Level Alarm

I'm getting a continuous alarm when the key is turned on (engine off). Unhooking the tan wire at the alarm silences it so I think the alarm is ok. Unhooking the tan wires at the heads (what I think are the high temp sensors) does not stop the alarm. Disconnecting the tan wire from the connector on the black wire that goes to the oil tank stops the alarm. When I bypass the tank by connecting the tan wire (engine side, not oil tank side) to ground I get the intermittent low oil alarm. Reconnecting it to the black wire going to the oil tank causes the continuous alarm, so I left it unhooked. What's wrong with the tank float? When I check for continuity between the 2 wires going to the tank shows an open circuit, so I don't think they're shorted together somewhere. I measure 12 volts at the tan wire on the engine side before connecting it to the black wire. Thanks for any help fixing this.

It could be the electronics in the oil tank sender itself which weren't worth a s**t. OMC had a lot of probs with those tanks.

If I leave the sensor unplugged, will all the other alarms continue to work? With the sensor unplugged I don't get the "chirp" when I turn on the key. I've checked and the oil level is going down with fuel consumption and I sometimes see a bit of smoke from the exhaust, so I think the VRO is working ok.
