It is a good engine. The basic design has been around for eons.<br /><br />Don't buy until you do the following.<br /><br />1. Look at the lower unit fluid. Make sure it does not look milky.<br /><br />2. Compression? Both cyl's. should be real close to each other.<br /><br />As far as the HP thing goes, he is right, that engine was rated at the prop. As far as it being eqivelant to a pre 1983 55 hp, that's a stretch. A 45 hp.- maybe.<br /><br />Typical gear train loss in an outboard is around 10%. Ratings have to be within 10% of the rated hp. Thus that engine could be as high as a 44, or as low as a 36.
