Well, it's cold in Indiana and I have a prospective buyer for my boat. I want to fix the last remaining issue that I know of and that's the HARD shifting caused by either a bad ESA or wiring or switches. I want to be very efficient out in the cold, and I once read some troubleshooting tips on this matter. I did depress the larger switch with the roller and it did not kill the engine.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Use this board's SEARCH function with "Cobra ESA" and you will find all the past discussions. Several of which also refer to Stuart Hasting's site, which has all the info ever published on ESA adjustments.

Ativating the shift switch will not kill the engine, it just "scatters" the ignition. Engine should run "rough" but not die. If you are doing this on a flusher, you may not duplicate the tension on the system. As such, the unit may shift corectly compared to having it in the water and attempting to get it out of gear. But, have someone shift into and out of gear while you visually watch the shift linkage. As the cables move (or attempt to move) out of gear, the "v-block" should rotate slightly and energise the interrupter switch. Some models also have an over-stroke switch which prevents the shift switch from activating after the unit IS in gear. Check that it is not "closed" when it should not be and causing the shift switch to not inteeruppt.
