I'm noticing a slower water stream tell-tale this year is this the usual indication when the impeller needs replacement? I was advised not to wait for an alarm since like car idiot lights.. it could be too late when it goes off.

Generally, do I just a new rubber impeller and does it usually come with gaskets?

I just did mine last night. Pretty easy to do. I only got the impeller, but there is a "kit" that has gaskets also. Here is a write-up I found that helped out. http://www.idofishing.com/forum/showflat.php/Cat/0/Board/equipment/Number/191911/page/0/view/collapsed/sb/5/o/93/fpart/1

Jeep-Rat, very helpful link and I agree, this time I'll only need the
impeller. BTW, did you need to add gasket grease on reassembly?

I did use a very thin bead of sealant on the gasket just as an extra measure. Be careful when tightening the water pump/impeller cover so you don't over tighten and warp it. the 4 bolts on that cover had loctite on the threads so I added some when I reassembled.

I just changed the impellor on my 90ELPTO this past weekend. Very easy job, hardest part was convincing myself it was okay to use the rubber mallet to remove the lower unit. Be sure to use some dishwashing detergent while installing the new impellor into its housing. It will help the install & prevent any damage upon the first revolutions until the housing is flooded with water.

I just changed the impeller on my 50hp merc 2 stroke and the only two hard parts were:
1. had to hit it lightly with a rubber mallet to get the lower unit to drop off
2. took a while to get everything alligned to put back together. Don't rush this step but just work slowly and it will work. A block of wood to place under the lower unit and hold it in place is handy since it gets heavy after a few minutes of holding it.

You need to either replace that new WP or find out why it's not working properly and fix it before you warp the heads..do not run it until this is done, it only takes a few seconds to ruin your powerhead.

Good tip, I hadn't even considered that. Thanks
