90hp 1979 inline 6, choke question..

3 carbs, only the upper 2 of them have chokes on them, bottom carb has no choke. Is this correct? or should the bottom carb also have a choke?

Starts very hard, have to drown the thing with gas to get it to start. Runs great, idles like it should once it starts.

Thanks..

Diplost, All the early inlines had the two choke plates only. I rigged up a third choke plate out of spare parts, but it made no difference in starting the beast. Just pump it up and choke the daylights out of it when cold.

OK, thanks. i just wanted to make sure about the 3rd choke. I'm gonna try to adjust the idle mix some see if I can make it start a little better.

Thanks..

Diplost, If the motor idles well and accelerates smoothly, do not change the idle mixture settings. Idle mixture doesn't affect starting ability greatly, and they are pretty sensitive. if you make it too rich, the motor will not idle at all.

I never had any troubles starting my 84 inline. If the battery was dead it would take, on a cold start, 3 maybe 4 pulls and it was running.

Re: 90hp 1979 inline 6, choke question..the rest of the story..

Just bought this boat/motor a month ago. Knew right at the start it needed a new starter. Ordered one. In the meantime while waiting for the new starter I was trying figure out how to get it to start easier.
You Guys confirmed the 2 chokes was correct.
New starter arrived.
I installed it, figured i'd try it make shure it was ok.
I have a cut down barrel for under the motor, put it under and filled it with water.
squeezed the bulb till it was hard and them some.
Turned the key on, pushed in for choke and cranked, starter seemed to work good.
After about 5 seconds just as I was letting up on the key it started!
I let it warm up, idled it down, let it run for a while, then shut it off.
I was amazed. I let it cool down for a couple of hours, and started it again, popped right off again the first try. spent the rest of the day doing that, started it about a dozen times....Im Happy.

What happened? My best guess is this..
The old starter was drawing so much current it was dropping the voltage to about 9 volts even with a fully charged battery...aparently too low for the ignition to properly fire the plugs. New starter never drops it to less than 11.5volts.

Thanks for the replies....

Diplost, Your theory is clever, but incorrect for that motor. That motor (if it is a '79) will have an alternator-driven ignition system. No battery power is used to run the ignition.

The correct theory is that the new starter spun the motor faster, giving a hotter spark and more choking, due to the vacuum produced by the choke plate.
