Hi everyone,

1990 90hp Force will start, but stalls and will only go 5-10 mph and then stall again and very hard to re-start (got towed back to marina Saturday). Throttle/linkage are working properly, do I now look to the carbs for answers? Or what is my next step from here?

Appreciate the help in advance,

Jack

Re: 90hp 1990 Force runs a while slow, dies and sounds flooded

I had a similar problem back in April. My Force 70 started perfectly and ran at 3500 rpm for about 1/2 hour. Then shut it down to troll. Started again to relocate and ran fine. Headed back to the boat dock at 4500 rpm. As I was turning into the cove, I backed it off slightly so as not to flood the transom and it died. It would not start; sounded like it was flooded. I used the trolling motor to get to the dock. After multiple attempts to re-start, I got it to run for about a 1 1/2 seconds at idle but it would just die, even with the addition of throttle.

I took it to the repair shop and I was told that they cleaned the carburetor with a spray cleaner because oil was clogging the jets. They also told me that it wasn't charging the battery (another thread here.) They didn't remove the carb because they couldn't get parts. I told them about i-boats and that they should add it to their web sites for parts.

So, I suggest that you clean the carb and try again.

Thanks for the reply harkawy. Yet another friendly Californian....

I am also having similar issues with the battery not charging. But back to the carbs; any suggestions for a newbie on "how to" clean carbs?

Thanks,
Jack

That, my new friend is an excellent question.

I had my carb cleaned at the local boat repair center, because the motor had died while on the lake returning to the boat dock. Their computer stated that the re-build kit for the carb wasn't available anymore so they used a spray. What kind of spray... I don't know. They told me that the motor wasn't charging the battery. Check out http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=252684 to read how many have solved the charging problem.

Good thread on battery issue...thanks for the link harkawy.

Going to work on the carbs issues after this 4th weekend (lakes around here are insanely busy on the holiday). If things go well I will tackle the battery and the new problem I just discovered of the motor not staying trimmed/tilted up.
Loving being a new boat owner!
