This is a first time post but I spent almost $1000.00 on this engine over the last year trying to figure this problem out. I have an intermittent problem after running for an extended amount of time. Basically this is what happened last time I was out. Started the boat and ran fine, headed out about 5 miles and stopped to fish. Started fine and took a open throttle ride for about another 40 minutes to another hole. Fished for maybe 30 minutes and tried to start but this is where is gets tricky. Started the boat and it idled fine but when I tried to drop it in gear it died. Started it up again and put in neutral and revved the engine up with no problem, ran strong. Tried to put it in gear and it died. After trying to do this a couple of times the problem got even worse. When it would start (after stalling trying to get it in gear) it would idle for a few seconds fine and then just cut out. Finally I just turned the key and jamed it into WOT and it studdered and then cleared up and took off. Drove it all the way back to the dock (about 45 minute trip) at WOT and it ran fine. Stopped at the canel right before the ramp and fished for about an hour. Tried to start it and it pulled the same stunt. Finally gunned it and it took off. By the time I was getting close to the ramp it was idling rough when you were not at WOT and would die on its own even if it was in gear and 1/2 throttle or less. Several hours later I got home and started it up to wash it out and it ran fine. Any suggestions?

Thanks a million,

David

Mechanic replaced a timing sensor a year ago plus a new water pump and power pack.

I have the same motor and the SAME PROBLEM. In fact, I have saved your description because it is so well-written. If you are still on this forum, did you ever find a fix? My marine trouble-shooting skills are limited, and that's bragging.

From Houston, same deal. From dealer" Diagnosed #3 carb idle emulsion tube had trash in it. Cleandeed out and test ran good." Problem with test tank is amount of time we spend running vs time in tank. Will be in water next week and give a real test. Also, this is done by a highly reputable place and a well known service tech. When this 2000 90 is running, it is scary fast and responsive. jblrail
