I have a 2001 90hp 2 stroke. When I slow down to an idle, it has a bad habit of stalling. It has done this since it was new. I did have the carbs cleaned and rebuilt the first year under warrenty, and it did help some. Now it is getting worse. I almost ran into a 45' Mainship yesterday when I came into dock. I was turning a corner to get in to the yacht club heading right for the Mainship when it stalled, I was about 3 feet from hitting it when I was able to start and backup.

It seems to happen when I power down to an idle. ANy help would be greatly appreciated.

When the motor is started, how does it idle. The shift and the throttle work together and I believe the throttle actually advances a tad to compensate for the load put on the motor when put into gear. Helicopters call this a droop compensator. Keep us posted

At start up it idles fine. Also once I restart it it is fine. It only seems to do this when I bring the throttle down.

try re-adjusting the idle speed up 100 rpm . Make sure the boat is warmed up and in the water so there's back pressure on motor through the prop exhaust .

I've got the '03 version of this motor and enjoy it. I think the design of it though with 3 cyl makes it a little rough idling until you get to 1800 RPM.

Have your engines always done this?

I'm wondering if your idle is a little low? As was suggested bumping up idle 100 rpm may be fine.

Are your plugs fouled at all or maybe your carbs are a bit dirty?

Joe

3 cyl( 75/90)... carb Mix adj update.... top carb 1/2-3/4 from seated... center & bottom carb Mix. adj.. 1 1/2- 1 3/4 from seated....adj idle to 800-900 using the small screw on the trottle arm... Also.. all MOTORS built before 2000..new primerballs & fuel pump Kits from merc For the NEW fuels failing old parts... I do 10- 20 a week.. Most are in need of the update... better idle.. Better running...
