Hey Guys <br /> I have a 90HP chrysler around 70s vintage and it is in top condition and runs great. But every time I start it for the first time of one day it wont fire at all but after I manually hold the carbys on WOT and spray in some engine starting spray it fires not a problem and will start soo easily and perfect every time after that for the day of boating not a problem, the problem is just the initial start in the morning no matter how much I pump the fuel up to it it wont fire at all unless I spray engine starter in the carbys. It seems too definately be a fuel problem somehow it seems like it cant be primed but once it is going it keeps going all day no worries, any ideas at what the first thing I should look at would be?

Are you pushing the key in to choke it? It is a common problem with new boaters is they dont know where the choke is. If you are using starting fluid you should stop. You will burn out your motor using this stuff even if it is for short periods of time. Use a mix of gas and oil mix and spray that into carbs instead.

Also, make sure you advance the throttle into the "neutral start" position by pulling out the nuetral start button and advancing the throttle for warm up and as eurolarva said, push the key in to choke and hold in until it starts up.

the key doesnt seem too be able to be pushed in, on my forward and reverse controls there is a metal button on the side that can be pulled out should I be using that somehow?

Re: 90HP Chrysler Starting

with cowling off you should see a solenoid next to the carburator. This solenoid is what opens the choke for the carb. It could be the previous owner got rid of the solenoid and rigged a manual choke. If this is the case the choke needs to be wide open at cold start then closed as soon as motor starts. On warm motor you should not need the choke to restart. It is almost impossible to start a cold motor without a choke.

That knob is merely to get engine to high idle

The knob is what I was referring to as your "neutral start" button. By pulling out that button it will disengage the gears and allow you to advance the throttle control forward and allow the engine to warm up at high idle.
