The saga continues...
I have an 82 E90tl whose tilt/trim gets stuck when fully raised. I have added fluid and have used the manual release to drop the motor. It will raise afterwards but not drop again unless manually released. Additionally, when manually released, it only goes to the trim bars...no further as the trim bars do not retract.
The outboard fairy appears to come by each night as it works each morning, both up and down (trim included), until it reaches the full up position where it once agains sticks and ceases to function.

Suggestions?

kj....swap the relays. If the problem reverses, change out the relays.

Re: 90hp Evinrude tilt stuck

I assume that you're saying that after hitting the full up position, the electric motor operates but the engine will not travel in the down mode. If so, this is strictly a hydraulic problem.

The usual cause of this type problem can be traced to two small ball bearing type check valves which are located in the oil pump itself. If one sticks (it happens), the resulting problem is exactly what you are encountering.

However, this type problem that I've encountered a few times has been that the engine could not be lowered immediately after tilting to the extreme up position...... but after approximately one minute, maybe a minute and a half, the pressure at the pump would equalized, releasing the pressure at that ball check valve, and the unit would then lower as it should.

Should this be your problem, the cure is to replace the oil pump, or live with that minute or two delay.

Joe, your description is correct.
How difficult is it to replace the oil pump?
Can I replace just the check valve?
Any idea on cost for the part?

Does anyone know how to change the check valve? Thanks, Doug.

Re: 90hp Evinrude tilt stuck

The check vale I spoke of is part of the oil pump and is not a servicable item. The pump would require replacing.

The PTT assy would need to be removed from the engine, then the electric motor removed from the PTT assy. That would reveal the oil pump. Ican't get at my books right now as the alarm is set but any dealer could provide the list price.

I may have a few of those pumps left in my remaining stock but check here with "iboats" first.
