90hp Force Problem

First off it's my first boat and I'm not a professional with the mechanic side yet... Well my first problem is, is that when I arrive at the lake, I pump the bulb (which is new) then push the key in to choke it, then try to start it, it usually takes 30 minutes to finally get the thing to start. Once it's started I'll go to push the throttle down to get going and it will usually die.. I can go back and pump the bulb some more while it's idling and then punch it and it will take off and run full speed just fine... I've replaced the fuel line and the spark plugs, as well as cleaned the carbs.. Can someone help me with getting it to start better and not keep dying when I push the throttle in to take off..?

When you start it do you keep the key pushed in as you turn it over.Just pushing it in without holding it in does nothing.OOPS sorry do a compression test FIRST!!!! Then post the results,they should be equal or close.
When you cleaned the carbs did you clean the mainjet holes with a tip cleaner?Some jets have a small hole that clogs.What did you set the air screw at??J

Check compression and spark.

Starting procedure:

Open fuel tank vent

Check the kill switch, place in "run" position

Squeeze fuel primer bulb till firm.

Advance the throttle 3/4 way, without putting it in gear. -- This is done by either pushing a button in the center of the controls, or pulling the shift handle toward the driver, or raising the fast idle lever, all depending on what control unit you have.

Activate the choke (fuel enrichment valve) by pushing in on the key. The valve is only open while the key is being pushed in.

Turn the key to start while continuing to hold the key in.

Release the key and choke when it starts.

3-5 seconds of "choke", is usually enough.

Be ready to pull the throttle back toward the idle/neutral position, when the engine starts and the revs increase.

Continue to pull the throttle back as the engine warms up.

You should not have to use the choke much, if at all, once the engine has warmed up.

Engine should start within 10 seconds of turning the key.

Okay guys, first of I dont know how to do a compression test, so a little help there. I'm a novice with boats rights now but learning.. I got home today and pumped the bulb til firm, put throttle 3/4 way down and choked and kept the key pushed in while trying to start. Got nothing... Not sure where the fuel vent is? Also is there any way that my choke isn't working and is there a way to tell if it's actually choking. Also any more help would be greatly appreciated, I took it to a dealer to work on it a while back and it cost me $600 and never fixed it so I would like to keep from having to take it.

as far as checking if your choke is working,Remove the engine cover and, without trying to start the engine, turn the key to the on position, and push in,...you should hear an audible 'click' from the engine.This means the choke solenoid is activated...push it in and out a few times to see if it works each time...post back and let us know...

I turned the key and pushed it in.. It does make a clicking noise!! Is it possible that the fuel line that is in the motor area that runs to I guess it's the fuel pump and then to the fuel filter.. Would u thank that the line is clogged or something!! Just throwing out ideas!!

do you have any records of service done to the motor?If its firing on all cylinders, then I would look at replacing the fuel pump diaphragm and check valves if they haven't been replaced to your knowledge, that way you know when it was done. This and replacing the water pump impeller generally is considered preventive maintenance,and should be done every two to three years. Keep us posted as to what you find ,it might help others. Just able to get back to working on my boat again... I ordered the fuel pump diaphragm on iboats and just got it in.. Can someone help me with installing it? Also What is the check valves and how do I replace them?

I got home today and pumped the bulb til firm, put throttle 3/4 way down and choked and kept the key pushed in while trying to start. Got nothing...

Try starting it with the throttles at a fast idle, if you pumped the fuel bulb, you can hear the fuel fill the carb bowls. Once the bulb is firm, crank motor with choke for 10-15sec should fire. If it was a bad fuel pump, it should still run til the carbs empty. Its possible the motor flooded and fouled the plugs. Low compression will still start, just not make power. My 125 would start and run on 2 cylinders.

You can waste weeks of testing and chasing down possible problems.You need to check the compressin FIRST!!!!!
Go to an auto parts store and buy a compression tester.Read instructions. Remove the plugs.Install tester and turn motor over ,then do the same on all the cylinders.Post your results.
Do use the fast idle to help start? J
