I Recently became an owner of a force 90hp It apparently is one of the later ones. I've read they stopped making them in 1996 My question is, Is there a CDI Box or does each coil have it's own cdi in it? It's the type of coil that has a plug on it and there is multiple wires in the plug. Also what exact year would this be? It has a tag on the top of the block that says 1998 could this be right? Thanks

Any stickers or tags?Look on the mid-section.It might be there.Model or serial #'s help/.
Post a few pick. One of the cowl,a couple of the powerhead. Then some of the lower unit. It's free to post so anything else you think might help.
That 98 sticker could be anything.J

Re: 90hp force questions about ignition

Yes, it could be a 1998 model.
They were made thru 1999.

The 90 hp a cdm ignition from 1996-1999.
There is no cdi. Each coil (cdm module) is independent.

The only definitive way to determine the year, is to locate the serial number.
It should be on the starboard side of the transom bracket, on an id sticker.
Serial number will start with the letters OE, followed by six digits.
Example: OE198443

Serial numbers for 1996 range from 0E138600 THRU 0E202999

1997 range from 0E203000 THRU 0E287999

1998 range from 0E288000 THRU 0E344999

1999 range from 0E345000 AND UP

Re: 90hp force questions about ignition

Thanks Roscoe You answered my question, I've never owned or worked on a force motor, But it sure appeared to me that each coil contained it's own CDI. So I'll do some switching around to make sure the pickups are all good. Then I'll just replace the coil that's bad, if in fact the pickups are all good.

Guy advertised the boat with a bad motor. So I bought the boat really cheap. And Of course I did a compression check before I started parting the motor out. Turns out it has good compression, But missing spark on # 3 cylinder.
Compression check with WOT came up 123/125/125

The guy had no idea what he was doing. So I'm hoping with a new coil, A new pump and a good flushing she'll be fine. I still have to check gear oil too.

How do these force motors run? Are they fast/slow? dependable?
