I just picked up a 91-95 (not sure of year exactly) 250 hp V-8 outboard. I am familiar with Yamahas but not OMC's. Can I get a factory harness and binacle style control box that plugs together without splicing etc? I see some other control boxes that list as new style wiring (I assume 96 and up) and have heard mention of wiring adapters, what is my best bet? Also, were these motors typically oil injected or available both with or without?

Welcome!!

If it's really a 91 to 95 motor you'll have a big red cannon plub on the engine wiring harness. If so, all you need is the boat harness and control for a 1995 & older Evin/John motor.

If it doesn't have the red cannon plug you'll need a boat harness & control for 1996 & newer.

They came with oil injection, you can use it or not. I'd use it.

Make sure you rig it like a V8, not a V6. Be sure to use the electric primer pump that comes with it. DO NOT use a primer bulb.

I am not sure what you mean about the electric primer pump. Is it internal? I ahve not had much time to research this motor. I absically bought it for next to nothing through someone I know and supposedly runs mint with very little time on it. I have the engine, thats it, no harness etc. I intend on using the oil injection as it is much more convenient, plus I have two spare omc oil tanks. Can you tell me if they were typically reliable or a POS? I have only had a Yamaha and it was pretty good, while at the same time I have seen OMC guys pulling their hair out. thanks

The primer pump is an electric fuel pump with a by-pass on it. You'll need that to pressurize the fuel line since a V8 does not have a bulb in the fuel line. That comes with the motor from the factory and is mounted externaly.

Thanks, I ended up seeing it in a parts diagram afterwards.
