91 Bayliner 1850 BR I/O - rear seats create tanning bed?

Sorry guys, bit of an obscure question, but thought I'd ask.

The rear seats on my 91 look like they can be lifted to create a tanning bed in back. The top of the engine cover is padded as are the back of the seats, and there is a slot in the side rails that seems to fit a tab on the outside of the seat cushions. However, in looking at this:
- The tab from the seat does not seem sturdy enough to support weight.
- The engine cover is notched, but not deeply for the seat to sit on
- There is storage under the seat, and these compartments are somewhat open to the engine

My first guess is no, these are not a "create a bed" seats. However, if they are not, why is the engine cover notched, and why is the slot there inside the side rails?

Hoping someone else here has the same of a similar boat and can give me some ideas.

That is how it works. They are plenty strong unless you are a big load ;) Never had an issue using them with our 2005

Thnx Oldjeep,

From the Bayliner website, the 95-on models looked pretty robust. However, these ones are not robust. I stuffed it in, and leaned on it (75 lbs?), and it gave out.

Mind you, the back seats in the boat were recently recovered, and it appears that the previous owner took good care of it, but didn't put on the boat's back cover that often. Possibly they just need some disassembly, and re-wooding.

I don't recall the seats being any different in our old BL 195, not as pretty but same basic setup. Entirely possible that your setup is just rotted out.

I don't remember exactly what year the old one was but I think either late 80's or early 90's

Hey oldjeep,

Very similar, except for the engine cover is one piece molded plastic. You can see it in the pic here (stolen from another website)

So guessing that we just need to build some slightly better supports into the seats, plus maybe some plain covers that sit over the storage under the seat to keep it looking clean with the bed is up.

Also guessing both have to be up at the same time, as the cover will move if not, allowing one to slide down.

The cover in the old boat was plastic, the newer one was upholstered plywood. They do have to both be up in order to use them, or at least I never tried only using one.
