OK ppls. Easy on me. I just bought this boat. First boat! :) It's a 18' MercCruiser 1991 Bayliner. I'm trying to test it out before I hit the water. I'm trying to start it. I pull the throttle level out and push forward a bit to give it gas. I turn the key and it just cranks. There is a red button below the key. If I hold this button down, it will start without hesitation. As soon as I let go the engine dies. What gives? What am I missing?

Thanks

It's a kill switch that is supposed to be held in by a lanyard that you "should:love:" tie to the operator in case he goes over board.

TallOne,

I too have a '91 Bayliner Capri. I will take a photo of the dash tonight. There is a lanyard that is supposed to be attached to that red button, mine has a small plastic clip that holds that button down. I am willing to bet that if you go to your local Bayliner Dealer, they'll be willing to sell you that clip.
