I just compeleted a carb rebuild and replaced the starter assemby (PITA first time but I think I got it down now). Problem is with the red interlock dog. It seems to move at will with no rhyme or reason sometimes preventing me from pulling the rope. I have to manually push it out of the way to crank the engine. It is behind the starter cup bar in the correct position from what I can tell. However there is small 1inch spring that protrudes off the dog and I'm wondering if this spring is supposed to attach to something. I don't see anywhere for it to attach and don't remember it attaching to anything when I disassembled the starter. Thanks for your help!!

I don't think it attaches to anything, it goes behind a tab to hold the interlock out. Operate the shift and throttle and watch it real close, maybe you will see how it is supposed to work. Sorry , I can't find a picture of the proper assembly, do you have a manual?

Sorry, no manual, but I have been looking closely at diagrams and pictures. They just don't show if that small 1 inch spring attaches to anything. It keeps locking and getting in the way of me cranking the motor...

The small spring is to hold the red dog away from the starter. It (the long end of the spring) goes on the outside of the small vertical bar. Not a lot of tension but it gets the job done. Even if you do find a picture it will more than likely have it installed wrong. In engines I've seen two out of ten are installed correctly. If you give your engine too much throttle it (the red dog) is supposed to prevent you from pulling the rope. Best of luck. Rick.

Thanks, Rick. That's it. I was missing that the small 1 inch spring attached to something. So, it attaches to the metal bar that is attached to the cup that the red piece goes behind on the starter, right? Seen here if you scroll down the page. The red dog is tucked behind the starter cup bar and the spring attaches to the same bar?

Thanks

Scroll further down maybe. There is a perfect picture of it in the correct place. Beside it (to the right) Leeroy shows a manual starter that is pre-1978. The first picture I saw as I scrolled down seemed to have it on the outside of the cup which is wrong but it wasn't a real good picture either. We all owe Leeroy a huge debit of gratitude for all he has done to make our lives easier. His site must be where I learned to install it cause I was puzzled about it for a long time myself.Anyway, the spring doesn't really attach to that vertical bar it just pinches against it. You'll see. Rick.

Thanks, Rick. The way it is now, the spring is pointing towards the carberutor hanging loose. I think I should turn it back the other way and pinch it against the metal bar like you said....
