Only maintenance on this motor is 9 months after new there was a replacement of oil pump (?). Now I am reading about vro failures. Should I have the VRO replaced on a scheduled basis as preventive maintenance. How about the impeller or any other items I should replace.

IMO, id completely get rid of the unreliable VRO oil injection system and just pre-mix. I would not mess around with that system, just get rid of it before it fails.

05Glastron, why do you say the VRO is unreliable - I've heard almost all good things about reliability.

I'm no expert on VROs but it is a 15yr old pump. Toss it out and upgrade to a new version if you want to keep VRO. Otherwise I'd toss it and premix before taking a chance.

i agree with BillP, its the old style and unreliable, but the new one is alot better.I think it's called OMS. I replaced mine but it wasn't failing, i guess piece of mind.

So it's just the old style VRO and not the current type (OMS) that is unreliable? I was just wondering why 05GlastronSX recommended premix - sounds like it might be worth changing to the new pump, but not necessarily premixing instead.

Re: '91 Johnson 175

The question is are you more or less reliable than a vro system in making sure oil is in the gas? Can you remember to mix? Do you know how to mix ratios accurately? Do you want to deal with making sure the oil gets suspended in the gas? Do you want to take the time to premix?

Will you perform routine maintenance on the vro pump and system to make sure it is in 100% fail proof condition? Do you believe the vro is 100% failproof in the first place? If not how much risk is that compared to your ability to do it manually? Will you remember to top off the vro oil tank?

It's really a personal choice that nobody else can answer...but a 15 yr old pump kinda sorta says someone wasn't interested in maintaing a vro system. Premixing might fit that profile better than a vro of any year.
