I just mounted a new to me 1991 Johnson 60hp on my boat. It started and ran perfect yesterday. I ran the cables through the boat and then it got rained on. I went to start it today and it wouldn't react to the keyswitch at all. I was thinking wither the switch was wet from the rain or I pulled something lose when I snaked the controls through.

Here's where I think I went wrong- I tried to "hotwire" the motor with a jumper cable straight from the battery to the starter. It tried to start for a second and then wouldn't react to the jump anymore. Can these starters get burned up from hotwiring?

Either the starter solenoid is shot or a fuse blew.

Check to see if your getting 12V to the starter solenoid.

As for the starter burning up from a hotwire I dunno. Ill see if I can dig up some info about that part.

Check your connection at the battery for corrosion sounds like a bad connection at the battery or a bad battery.

When it would not respond to the keyswitch, it could have been a blown fuse. You should always get rotation from the starter when you jump it direct from the battery. Any chance you jumped the starter with the jumper cables hooked up backward? Either the battery is bad, or one of the internal leads to one of the brushes is open. The starter is easy to pull apart and visually check it out.

Thanks for the responses. It turns out that that 20amp fuse right before the solenoid was blown. Replaced it and it fired right up!

There is a fuse in a holder on the back of the engine. It looks like a standard fuse holder.

If it's blown, you will get no response from the ignition key.

If that fuse blew, you may have popped your rectifier too. The engine will run without that but not charge the battery.

I'm new to outboards. If the charging system is working, will the battery show above 12v like on a car? If not how do you trouble shoot a rectifier?

Read the voltage of the battery before you start the motor and then read it again after you start and run it voltage should be higher with it running than before.
