I just purchased this motor after my Merc 150 xr2 took a crap (blown motor). I'm not at all familer with Johnson outboards and can use some help. First, what type of oiling system do i have? Is it the VRO? I haven't heard the best of things about Johnson oiling systems. I picked this motor up for a resonable price and it was cheaper then fixing the one I have. I picked this motor up for 1400 dollars. Does it sound like a good deal or not? My next question is should I diconect the oil injection or does this year motor have a good oiling system? Next I am installing this motor on my boat probably this Thursday and could use some tips on do's and dont's. I just need to get back in the water so I can get some more fish in the boat. Know what I mean. Thanks for any input.

Re: 91 Johnson GT 150 help

I'l take a stab at this. I have been told that the VRO system on your GT 150 (and my '89) Pumps oil at a constant 50:1 fuel:eek:il ratio, and that this started sometime in the mid '80s. Disconnecting it is a sourse of discussion on this and other boards. I have read and have been told that OMC has a fuel only pump retrofit kit to totally eliminate the VRO fuel/oil pump. Why would they do this if their VRO was perfect? That is my logic anyway.

I bought my '89 GT150 this past spring and disconnected the oil side of the pump. An OMC mechanic told me it worked fine for 14 years and not to chance it any longer. I now pre-mix 50:1. When the fuel side of the original VRO pump dies, I will probly get the retrofit fuel pump.

I was told these are great engines with a little TLC. They like to be run at the top of their rev range - 5500 rpm. Carbon will kill it, so decarb often - twice / year. Use only Champion QL77JC4 plugs. Use only 87 octane fuel. High octane fuel burns to slow and will rob it of power.

good luck,
Duck L.

Re: 91 Johnson GT 150 help

Duck I thank you for your reply. I think for the comfort I will premix 50:1. It's hard to have comfort in something that is mechanical and that could cause a failure to the to the powerhead and then im back to start one. It's kind of funny that Johnson has such a thing as a retro fit fuel pump. I guess that if they know people are going to elimanate the oil pump then they figure they are going to make so money on that as well. Thanks again.
