Could somebody tell me how big of a gas tank I need on a 18' pontoon boat? It has an old 50HP 2 stroke on it. So is there anybody out there with a 18 footer with a 50 HP motor that can tell me what size gas tank you have on yours and how long you can run it on a tank full. We just bought this old 18 footer and so I was wondering if I need a bigger tank. We plan on using it on some lakes that don't have marinas.

I have a 18 ft. with a 40 hp on it that I use for fishing mostly with some cruising, I go out for half a day and use around 3 or 4 gallons a trip. I run it around 1/2 throttle maybe a little over that.

Assuming you have tank tray's on the back of your tubes, two, 6 gallon tanks would suit you best.

We have an 18 footer with a 40 and a 12 gallon tank which is plenty. We go out for the day and burn about 3-4 gallons. Probably run at close to WOT for a couple hours and river cruise for another a half hour or so in and out.

Your engine will burn 5 gallons of fuel per hour at wide open throttle. Make your calculation based on that. Top speed will be 18 - 20 MPH so you can figure the amount of fuel you need to cover the distance you intend to travel. The rule of thumb is 1/3 of the fuel load going, 1/3 coming back, and 1/3 in reserve.
