91 toy PU sputter

hey folks,
i got a 91 toyota PU. the smallest engine w/auto trans. i think the 22R-E engine, sorry the boys got it out tonight so i can't go look. no air. is a fuelie though. also i do have a heater, and a aftermarket cassett player.....snicker, snicker. want some pics. more snickerin.....
anyways, got me a sputter in my engine. a momentary miss at any rpm, very intermittant, i think electrical. done me the minor tune up thing, cap, plugs, rotor, plug wires, pvc valve, air cleaner, guess that's about it so far. usually happpens at low rpm though. when drivein it nicely. the minor tuneup parts have made it better and less in occurance, but , not there yet.
i've not done a fuel filter yet. though i don't really suspect that. maybe a coil? don't see no arcin with the hood open at night though..... any more good tests i can do to find the culprit? time to quite hit and missin it. time to diagnois i think........

Compression, look for a bad exhaust valve. Dirty injectors?

can you describe it a little better ( more detail) like when it sputters, under acceleration etc.
could be cold start valve, coil, igniter, injector, wire, cts,ecm......
is the engine throttle body or multi-port injected?
2 or 4wd ?

Fuel Injection Air Flow meter check for bad or green connections,broken wire.....Injector o-rings leaking cheap fix 5 bucks.......throttle body gasket leaking ...as you can see I'm leaning more to vaccum leak to be the cause of your trouble check all vaccum lines for leaks A compression check should be done on all 4 bangers before you try to fix them

How many miles on it? You just might have some wear on the entire engine.

Try adjusting your valves or have it done for you.Make shure it is done when the engine is hot.Its 12thou on the intake and 8thou on the exhaust.

i wanted to thank everyone for the ideas on where to look for my sputterin truck problem. however.....the problem has got worse. it happens, when cold or warmed up, all speed ranges. no load, under load. i have a code 14 on the engine check light. translates to coil or ignitor problems. the problem is intermitant, though cronick enough to be undrivable. i must say i've failed to diaganois this problem and have givein up. took it to the auto mech today. i had not checked any fuel systems myself. nor emession controls, nor compression or valves. this enging has 100k on it. did check for vac leaks, timeing, air gap, coil, signal generator resistance, lateeda.
well, the mech is still diagnoisin. amazingly. i may have been on the right track. on an o scope. they're sayin the sparkline fails right prior to a failed running condion. so they're thinkin signal generator (pickup coil), even though the signal generator ohms correctly. also from their experieces the ignitors they've seen they say either work, or don't. apperently there aint no way to diagnois a ignitor other than all other ign. componants are proper. so it must be the ignitor. i hate diagnoisin by inferance. but guess thats the way it is sometimes.
so anyways. time will tell as to weather i, and now the auto mechs are on the right track or not. i hope so. at least it sounds like something has been found to be faulty. the spark line on the o scope. and that's a start i think......

well, got my truck back. unfortunetly neither the mechanic nor me think it's fixed. sequence of events. got the bum spark line. R&R the signal generator, primary line strightens up. seconday side still not hip. still runs poorly. R&R ignitor. (used ignitor out of the junk yard) spark line is hip now. still runs like crap. pull one fuel injector wire to test if it's firein. it is and starts runnin good. replace that wire and it runs fine. shrug. mech don't know either. he charged me for parts and bouts $20 for labor. this is a high price mech that aint not fixed my stuff before. he always wins. has several techs in his employment. all the hip tools and testers. bet they was bouncein the problem off ea. other. to no avail. gave up and gave it back to me. runnin well i might add.
only other thing that he commented on was that it had good fuel pressure. i say it must not be valves, chain, compression, basicly i think i'm mechanicly sound. guess i'll wait for it to fail again. as it surly will. i hate it when this happens.......fixes it self for no reason. geez..........mechanic was pretty bummed too. i think he lost his $$$ on this one. had me in for a week plus....
well, gave it back to the 16 year old. bet he'll let me know when i'm sol again.............on to the next problem i guess.......

Interesting replace wire on fuel injector and it runs fine,well that sort of sounds like you might be having a problem with your FUEL INJECTOR RELAY about a 10 buck fix or less
