While trying to figure out what was holding up my lower unit to check the impeller that I haven't replaced in 10 years, I found these objects inside the engine compartment at the bottom towards the back.. They were all stuck together (because of whatever the magnetic objects are (2 of them) plus the metal plates) and covered in dirt/grit/sludge/oil residue.

The first picture is exactly how I found the pile of mess and moved it to the table for a picture, the other pics are after they have been cleaned and separated.

Does anyone have a clue what these objects are and where they came from??

I have a certain degree of fear that the prognosis is going to SUCK!!!

Thanks in advance for any input or knowledge of what the metal plates are and where they came from..

Magnets might from the flywheel.

No it means (if that's what it is) its gonna cost a few bucks to repair. Pull the flywheel that should tell the story. If that's what it is a magnet may have come loose and caught the stator. Magnets would have to be recemented and stator replaced.

If its indeed from the flywheel like others have said, I would hardly say its terminal. I'd imagine you would just remove the flywheel and replace the stater and flywheel magnets.

Remove the flywheel and check it out. Only way to know for sure.

If the motor has been working those pieces may be from a previous breakdown.
If the magnets and stator were damaged it surely wonldn't run.

I highly disagree with a previous breakdown (no offense) I tend to keep my nose in the engine compartment and this is the first time I have ever seen those things laying around?

Any help, how do I lock the stator from turning when I break the bolt loose.. Also, do I need to mark anything and replace it as it was?

Any other tips/do not's that I should keep in mind or avoid??

Thank you guys for all that you do for us weekend warriors!! I am more like a once a month warrior but i do like to have some level of confidence that the boat will get me out and back again!

Thanks in advance!

Best investment! A good OMC manual with that model number. I think you're going to need it

As #10 stated a svc manual is great thing to have, even gives what tools are needed for diff ops. You will need a flywheel holder, unless you take it off with air, and a puller(like harmonic balancer puller), don't use a jaw type.

The manual should have a model number listed on it! It may cover many different models also!

Watch ebay I've had very good results finding OMC manuals.

A word to the wise....do not use a air impact to install or remove flywheels on 35 amp flywheels....

Ken Cook Manuals ;) are OEM Boat Repair Manuals, Videos & Charts

I feel your frustration on finding pieces. If the engine turns.......trust me we have seen worse discoveries.

Check your PM. I sent you a message with a link. Good site to read the manuals from. Not sure if its against the rules to post it here.
