'92 40 Mariner Magnum bad idle

My brother has complained in the past that our 40 Magnum doesn't run along well at idle speed... meaning, in gear... putt-putting through shallows, no-wakes, etc.

Well, I ran the engine for a while at idle, no problems.

But, when I approached the landing to trailer the boat, I tilted the motor up for shallow running, and low and behold... idle problems. If it was running, and you tilt up, and keep running... motor will stay running but you can hear it's "loading up." If you kill the motor, and attempt to restart it with the motor tilted... good luck. you can use the choke switch on the key to attempt to get the motor running. but it's just not right. ANd, if you get it started, when you put it into gear it will immediately bog out.

So, I really suspect carb issues. I haven't examined the carb on this motor... but I know the sort of things that would cause this issue on my motorcyle carbs. fuel float would be my first guess (like it's sitting with too much gas in the bowl, and when it's tilted... it's flooding).

Anyway... anyone got a good pic of blow-up pic of the carb for these engines?

Or, if you think I'm way off base, other ideas of what's going on?
