Just got done fine tuning the motor. Took it out for a sea trial, the motor runs pretty good. At idle the water temp is at 160 degrees then shoots to 220 @WOT. On the muffs it also idles at 160. This motor did not have a thermostat when I bought it and I did not know this until after re-building the power head. I put one in. I also put in a new water pump about two weeks ago. After about a 20 minute ride home I checked the motor and the flywheel was to hot to touch after about 10 seconds and the rest of the motor could be touched alittle longer.
Any ideas of what the problem could be if any? What should this motor run normally?
Thanks,
Wayne

anything over 163 degrees is overheating, how and where are you measureing the tempature? do you have good water flow out the tell tale? are there any signs of steam or what appears as WHITE SMOKE?

Could be your bypass valves are sticking. They're supposed to open at higher rpm's and let some water pass around the thermostat. My 70, although a 1985 and somewhat different from yours, idles at 140 deg. and actually drops to about 130 deg. at wot when the bp valves open.

Temp. readings are coming from the gauge on the dash. Telltale stream seems fine and there are no visable signs of steam or white smoke.
What and where would bypass valves be? This motor did not have a therostat, I put it in. I'm also awhere of a bullitin to relocate the hose from the lower part of the motor to the top but can't find.

Re: '92 70hp evinrude overheating!?

Sorry Wayne, the 92 70 doesn't appear to have bypass valves. On my 1985 they are under the thermostat couver beside the thermostat.

I just looked at the 92 on the BRP patrs site and can't see any valves, just a thermostat.

I think the line you are looking for exits the exhaust couver on the port side of the motor. It produces the telltale stream to indicate the pump is working. However, I am not certain of this.

I will bow out of this thread and let someone more familiar with the 92 take over. Sorry for any confusion.

Glen..
