92 chaparral gimble bearing

grrrr....im trying to replace my gimble bearing and cant get the old one out....i got the slide hammer its hefty and put the hurtin on it and it wont budge....an i missing something? is there something holding it there? please help...it would be nice to get on the water...its been over a month now...i thought it was my lower unit but hesitated buying a used one and kept getting advice but i didnt wanna fork over 600+ dollars if i wasnt sure...the realized that the gimble bearing was shot and that was my trouble nit the lower...found that , then realized my u joint boot is cracked (thats ordered) and now cant get the fricken bearing out

sorry i wasnt more specific....i have a 92 chaparral it has a mercruiser 3.0 with and alpha one gen 2 outdrive

I know a lot of people use a long threaded rod - a length of allthread. Use a nut and a couple big washers and use that to pull the gimbal bearing out.

A three jaw puller /slidehammer combo will get that pesky critter out. Make sure you align the oil passage when reassebling.Jerry

the slide hammer that i was using was on with the three jaws on it....and i really slammed the crap outta it for 30 mins and got nowhere..

If it's in there with rust and corrosion, it may be very difficult to get out.
The tool Fishermark described is basically what the Merc tool is. The all threaded rod goes into the 3 jaw puller for the slide hammer. Then a few plates across the bellhousing and tighten the nut down on the all thread and pull the gimbal bearing out. I have used 6 Merc plates and they ended up bending on one (Salt water and a year with water in it)

there is rust...i bought some pretty expensive penetrating lube so ill dowse it when i get back out there and give er a go again...i looked at the manual u sent me the other day and its awesome and there didnt appear to be anything that was infront of the bearing holding it but i was just askin to make sure.... rust = grrrrrr
