I just got an older boat from a co-worker, '70 Newman, and this motor( 92Evinrude 48hp, Model# E48ESLEN )came on the boat, and he said that they both were going to need some work. So I first started by charging the battery. That worked. Then I got good gas w/ the correct oil mixture. I took a while but was successful in getting the motor running. **And yes and made sure that I had a water hose running and hooked up to the motor, so I wouldn't burn it up.** I got it to crank up. It idled low and would cut off, but I adjusted it and think I have that fixed. I have been able to run the motor with no problems that I can see. I can throttle/rev it up fine. When it comes down it acts a little shakey. I have also been able to turn down the throttle(cold start) and engage the propeller with little problems. ***here in lies the problem*** I took it out on a lake Tues, as soon as I put the boat in the water it took 10min to get to crank up and idle, and that was just so I could take off the trailer. I then parked it to move my car. When I came back it took another ten minutes to get it started again. I was able to get it goind and was moving along pretty good. However, as soon as I tried to accellerate....nothing...it just stayed at the same speed. It did for about 10-15sec go to full throttle, but came back down. So I tried to push the key/choke to boost some fuel to the engine and it acted like it wanted to increase speed and power, but it did not. ANY HELP/IDEAS would be greatly appreciated.

Jailermac:

If you are unsure of the service hostory of this motor, here are a couple of things that need to be done, which you didn't mention already doing:

1) replace spark plugs - make sure you get factory recommended ones for that particular motor

2) decarb motor (use the search feature above here and look up decarb - there are several very thorough explanations posted here)

3) check /clean fuel filter

4) have you checked the carb jets/needles? (low and high speed)

5) check timing and mixture adjustments (idle and high speed)

BTW, I hope you have a manual. It will be your best friend!

:D Thanks for the tips. Some co-workers and I we discussing it today at work, and we may have come up with a solution and what the problem was/is. Being that the motor runs fine when I am forcing water through it but not when it is in the lake, the problem lies in the impeller(sp?) or the water pump. One of those two things are not pushing the water through the motor like it should. That is my coarse of action for in the morining is to start the investigation there.

Thanks again and if you have any more ideas, would love to hear them..

Thanks
