I was starting my Johnson 30 today and the pull cord came out. The rope did not break, the knot just came out on the end. Would it be easy to pull the recoil assy off and fix it or should I take it to a shop?

It can really screw up a day of boating when your pull cord comes out and you cant start the engine. I think that I'm going to invest in an electric starter!

IF YOU HAVE NEVER WOUND ONE OF THESE UP TO PUT THE TENSION BACK ON THE SPRING BEFORE ,THEN I WOULD RECOMEND THAT YOU HAVE SOME ONE THERE TO HELP YOU HOLD THINGS .IT IS NOT COMPLICATED ,BUT IF YOU HAVE NEVER DONE ONE THEY CAN BE A PAIN IN THE A--. OF COURSE I HAVE DONE MANY OF THEM AND THEY CAN STILL BE A PAIN.

JUST SO YOU KNOW MOST OF THE EVIN/JOHN OUTBOARDS CAME WITH NOTCHES IN THE FLYWHEEL TO MANUALLY WRAP A PULL ROPE AROUND IT TO GET IT STARTED . YOU WOULD STILL HAVE TO PULL THE REWIND ASSEMBLY OFF TO BE ABLE TO DO THIS BUT IT WILL BEAT PADDLING . OF COURSE I WOULD STILL OPT FOR THE ELECTRIC STARTER,OF COURSE THEY TO CAN LEAVE YOU STUCK AT TIMES .
