92 johnson 40hp wiring

having problems getting the right wiring harness from the dealer i got one that is close, and dont want to drive back (30 miles) to return it (done it 4 times now). so i want to modify what i have to work. so i need a diagram of the wires. can anyone send me a scan ? the librarys ref. book only goes to 89 and doesnt show all the wiring.

Howdy, BCstang.<br /><br />You first need to verify what year your engine is. If you bought a wiring harness that doesn't fit, you might have the wrong year.<br /><br />After you have the year verified, buy a manual. It is a modest investment and doesn't require you to ask for illegal copies.<br /><br />Good luck.

Hey stang....<br /><br />If yer not sure of the year, post the model number here and one of these great humanitarians that frequent the area will make sure ya got what ya think ya got.....<br /><br />You can verify the model number from the plate on the transom mount by looking for a soft plug on the engine block. If they are different, post both. <br /><br />Your engine was built in two versions, one with VRO and one with out. It's important to know this. What you may be seeing is a harness that fits both or the other....confused yet?<br /><br />And if ya' like the engine, take JB's advice and get a manual. You'll be glad ya' did.<br /><br />Keep us posted on your progress.

i have the vro model, ive been to the dealer three times all three times ive gotten the wrong part that they ordered. i know what i need, but i dont know omc or bombardier part #s so i cant tell them, because aparrently they dont know their job. the reason i want to do it myself now is because im sick of driving 45 minutes one way to the place. i dont want to buy a manual i had one for my last motor, never used it. to dumbed down in my opinion. if i get a manual i want an omc service manual i dont like the aftermarket ones that show a parts breakdown of a 110 horse and say 40 horse is similar. pardon my ***** session'

i guess all i really need is the pin outs for the keyswitch. what color goes to what terminal. the control end of the cable is for a 1995 or newer control and has a connector rather than ring terminals connected to a switch

If you cut the key switch end and install ring termials. How are you going to connect to the engine? Which overheat horn do you have?

i wish i could post a pic on here, the harness i have has the round red connector that fits to the motor, the control end has the newer style connector that connects to the switch, the horn came with the harness and is new.

I have not seen a harness like this. The black plug with purple, black, cant see the 3rd wire, should be gray is for the tach. The other colors will take time to insure Im correct. Post the remaining wire colors, and type of switch/control.

the only 2 wires on the harness that dont corrospond to the standard are<br />a purple with white tracer and black with white tracer <br /><br />the only 2 wires on the switch not used yet are <br />the ground and choke wire

Try this.<br />Red to switch termial B<br />Black to M<br />Purple to A<br />Purple/white to C<br />Yellow/red to neutral safety switch then <br />to switch termial S<br />Black/yellow to second termial marked M.<br /><br />If you have a black/white instead of black/yellow, connect to switch termial M.
