A little confused, I have a 92 Johnson 60hp, that I used everyday until 2 months ago. It was running great a couple of months ago. Today, I pull it out to start and clean it up. It would stumble and die. So I drained the carbs, same thing. Pulled carbs, just to check, #1 carb jet was plugged a little. Cleaned and put back on, now same condition. It did run for a little bit, but when you try to advance the throttle and it dies. It also want even fire if the throttle and timing is advanced further then idle. Tried separate fuel tank, both fuel is good, no water and fuel had stabilizer in it. Any ideas???? Thanks for your help guys.

what do you mean "It also want even fire if the throttle and timing is advanced further then idle"? what are you doing. did you use a carb kit, to reassemble the carb? did you do these steps? http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=244013
if not you wasted your time.

I did use a the carb kits, although only needed to replace a couple of gaskets. When I say it won't start past fast idle. If I place the throttle in neutral and advanced to fast idle, as soon as the timing is advanced it will not start. If I leave the throttle up and locked it will start but only for a sec.

time to check spark and compression. compression should be 100 + psi, and within 10 % of each other. spark should jump 7/16 inch. check all 3. did you clean all 3 carbs?

Compression is 145 across all three, all carbs were cleaned. Have not tested spark yet, will do and get back to you. Thanks for your help.

Re: 92 Johnson 60hp, starting issues

So I got it running, the electric primer was leaking and the cam that hits the roller on the carb as it advances the timing was loose and out of whack. My next question is it still runs rough. I have good spark on all 3 cylinders, compression was 145, 148, 145. Yesterday, I pulled the spark plug boot off bottom cylinder and it died, same thing on the middle cylinder, and on the top one it just kept running. Is this normal? I think it is but wanted to check with you guys. What could be causing the rough idle, kinda bounces around a little.
Thanks for your help
