I just bought a 92 18' Bass Buggy pontoon boat with a 92 60 HP Johnson (Tracker). The original owner said that he just had the carb rebuilt & that I may want to turn the Idle up. I had it out today (Daytona FLA) and I had an extremely hard time keeping it running when I put it in gear. It ran fairly well when not in gear (at a higher RPM), and when I did get it to make it passed the low idle & get it running, it ran super
(from ~2K RPM - 4K RPM). Then coming into the dock... it stalled and wouldn't start.
More Details>>> It had an oil injection resevoir that the electrical connection was disconnected and the line was plugged with a bolt/clamp. The owner said that he "preferred" to mix the fuel/oil because if the pump were to malfunction, then it would trash the whole unit.
Anyway... Its in the slip & I have relatives coming in for the weekend. I don't have a manual (yet). I read from other posts that there could be numerous probs... vacuum leak, air suck, diaphram pin holes in the fuel pump, the oil pump was not disconnected, etc. 1 last thing... I noticed a small fuel color in the h20 when startin
Q #1: Is there a screw to turn up the idle, where will I find it (port or stbd), and can this be done while in the h20?
Q #2: Does this sound like a fuel line problem & Q #3: Where would a smart boat owner smart trouble shooting. Let me know if all of this would be more easily handle out of the agua.
Please email me (ceo@westonunion.com) with your diagnoses (plural) docs

WestonUnion,
I'm betting that when the Carbs were rebuilt, they were not syncronized properly. Called a lync & sync job. In other words, you need to make sure that all the Carb throttle plates are opening at the same time, in conjuction with the timing. This requires that you set the plates to open properly and a Manual will get you through this quickly. The idle screw is on the Right side of the engine, at the carborators. One screw controls all the Carbs, as far as idle speed. You will see the 3 Carbs and the hardware(Rod) that connect them together. This is where you would do your adjustments. There is a plastic roller that the throttle cam rest against at Idle. That cam has a mark scribed on it and must line up with the center of the roller. If it does'nt, loosen the adjustment screw and position it correctly. This is not a substitute for syncing the carbs, just something to check out first. Most of this is fairly obvious when you get to looking at it, although it will be more difficult when in the water! Good Luck,
