Hello all,
well
When I purchased the boat it had spark in both motors and would fire. Took it home a set to work getting the power tilt and trim and trim tabs fuctioning with a bit of help from the forums. I also cleaned a few connections, checked fluids and impeller. went to start the motor a few nights ago and it would not fire. Its a
92 4.3l/ 6T2 mercruiser Yamaha outdrive. On 26ft renken
I went to check the spark and it was absent. Followed plug wire back to what I thought would be a distributor but found insteadwhat I can only describe as two coil packs, 1 with four plug wire and 1 with two. In the place of the standard distributor cap with the male ends is a sensor with four wires: grn, red, white, White/black that feed directly into the ECU/ignitor box ( 5"X8"x1.5" black box with info sticker on it labeling oil type, spark gap etc) basically I'm at a loss I would like to trouble shoot but I'm not even sure the correct name of the parts and I can't seem to find a ignition module .
so where would the ignition module be it it has one? What type of ignition system is this? And any info would be greatly appreciated.

Strike one Yahama outdrive. is not supported by anyone
Strike Two Two of them
Would need pics to see what you have but you could stick in a Mercruiser system or a GM system

Hi, welcome to iboats, from the sounds of it, we may need to see a photo of what you have there...Such as the ignition system and the over all engine assembly. Photo Upload Tutorial

Are there any serial numbers anywhere on the engine, stern drive or outside transom assembly?

You mean a mercruiser/ GM ignition system. Would that tie into the wiring harness without to much fuss.

Worst comes to worst you could install new ignition systems fairly easy. As others have said, let us know what you have and maybe its salvageable.

Have not seen something like this, looks like a 2 stroke setup. Sounds like Bt has the better understanding on this one

Denso distributor, from what I can find is next to nothing on Yam and the 4.3L motor. most recommend changing the ignition system out to Delco EST

Its is a denso distributor. I would like to troubleshoot it if possible. Worse case its junk Where would I start with new ignition system can I do the auto store route or should I do mercruiser parts. How different the will the wiring harnesses be? do you know of any resources on this topic?

Though this response may take a bit of time as Capt Ken doesn't visit the forums as often as he use to but maybe Capt Ken would be able to add some sort of input towards this one due to the color of light blue/grayish around the coil pack assembly. The engine seems to be a mixture of parts possibly from Yahama I/O to Mercruiser.

Some Yamahas had a PULSER, REVOLUTION PICK-UP as a dizzy which fired off coil packs...Thinking the systems are mixed together somehow as seen in the following parts diagram for an example, http://www.crowleymarine.com/yp/TR966254/electric-parts-1-engine-v8-5-0-yems-1989-v8

This may not be there but if you get a chance try looking just above the starter for a serial number tag like this,

It seems you mostly have a Yamaha with possibly some merc parts on it. Searching Yamaha 4.3 yemsp yields this for a parts guide and some very general tech info, http://www.cmsnl.com/yamaha-v6-43-ye...576/partslist/

Doesn't look like iboats carries one but the service manual you'd looking for is CB787 - Clymer Manuals Yamaha Stern Drives, 1989-1991 B787 (Printed or online Manual), https://www.clymer.com/yamaha-stern-...1989-1991-b787

Or EBay too, http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from...+B787&_sacat=0
