I just acquired a circa 1992 Nissan (Tohatsu) 2.5 hp motor, pretty mechanically inclined, seller showed me receipts and stated that he'd run less than 2hrs total on back of a dinghy.

I dumped in some fuel after inspecting the tank, got plenty of fuel at the carb but no spark. Tinkered w/exciter, coil/condenser plug wire/points ... magnets in Flywheel, nada.

I can rebuild carbs w/my eyes closed, this puppy really does appear practically new, however, local mechanics can rack up big money just 'diagnosing' these little motors. Other than some surface rust that I polished off in the faces of the magnets on the flywheel, I saw nothing wrong. I filed the points...zip. Still no spark.

My attitude is I'm willing to replace everything in the electrical system because it's cheaper than what our local dealers will want to 'diagnose' what's wrong and tell me what needs replaced.

My question is...are any/all of these parts interchangeable w/other tanaka/tohatsu/shindaiwa type air/h2o cooled 2strokes? Can I acquire them (all electronic components) at either the better auto parts stores ('napa') or small engine repair shops? I Need:
Points
exciter/coil w/insulated wire & plug boot
condenser

Suggestions? SN is in the 66xxx range;
Thanks in advance,
-Mick

If all earth wires are ok, you'll need to diagnose which is the no spark cause from Exciter Coil, Ignition Coil & CD. Get a service manual and check with meter each part to aisle the problem. Parts are interchangeable only between 2.5-3.5 same brother barnds models, Tohatsu, Nissan, Mercury.

Mission Impossible to attempt an internal repair as all reffered parts are heavyly sealed. Trial and error each related part if planning to buy them all used or new. A expensive alternative than troubleshooting all electrical components one by one.
