92 Stratos Prop Question?

I have a 92 Stratos 274 FS (17.75') and I just had a 94 Mercury XRi 150 put on it. The prop on the motor now says Renegade Bass 13 1/2 x 25. Will this prop be ok for this setup. The boat is used mostly for fishing and joy riding. Picking the boat up tomorrow and hoping to put it in the water this weekend. I am a new boater and any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 92 Stratos Prop Question?

you need to run it and see..that is a big pitch, I would think a 21 or 23 would be better, but since you already have that prop run it and see what your RPMs are at WOT, you want it to reach 5300-5500 RPMs. If RPMs are too low it will put too much load on the engine and cause premature wear and poor performance. you will add about 200 RPMs for each pitch you go down. o yea make sure the motor is set at the right height..if it is too low you will lose RPMs/performance. get someone who knows what to look for to help you out with that. most boats I have ever seen could have the motors jacked up 1 or 2 holes at least, not sure why everyone just puts them in the top holes.

Re: 92 Stratos Prop Question?

I am planning on putting the boat in the water on Sunday so I will check it out. I do not know much about setups, but that sounded like a big pitch prop to me. I am hoping it works ok until I can purchase a new one. I just had the motor put on and extra money is scarce right now. Thanks for the advice.

Will an aluminum prop work ok for my setup? If so which prop would you recommend I look at? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. The boat is 17 1/2 foot 92 stratos fs with a 150 merc xri 94 model.

yes aluminum props work just fine..see what your max RPM range is with what you have..also check motor height.outboard height.jpg

Re: 92 Stratos Prop Question?

The motor came with this prop (Renegade Bass) 4 blade, but everything I have found says that it is an OMC prop. How is it possible that this prop is installed on a Mercury motor?

Re: 92 Stratos Prop Question?

Thank you. I was worried maybe the previous owner put something on that didn't belong. When I am shopping for a new prop though, I would just look for a prop that fits a Mercury 150...correct? Thank you very much for all of your help on this. I feel like I have no clue!

yes... iboats has one of the largest prop selections on the internet, and reasonable cost too.

Re: 92 Stratos Prop Question?

When I purchase a new prop (probably aluminum right now) is there a brand or style (3 or 4 blade) to use or not use? Also, should I stay with the 13 1/2 diameter or doesn't that matter as much? Again, I really appreciate all of the help!

I am going to put the boat in the water Sunday to run the motor and check out the prop. Probably do some fishing while I am at it. Thanks again.

Re: 92 Stratos Prop Question?

3 blade props do slightly better at top end...4 blade props have a better hole shot..depends on how you will use the boat..if you go up in diameter it will reduce your RPMs @ WOT by about 50-100 RPMs with 1" increase. anything that comes up in the iboats search will fit. just search for props for your motor, it will only give you the choice of what will fit. 13 1/2 sounds a little small..maybe thats why its a 25 pitch...most 150 merc props are 14 - 15 3/4...sounds like someone did re-hub that prop to fit that motor.

Re: 92 Stratos Prop Question?

We took the boat out this morning for a test run...not very long though, the wife was cold. It was only about 45 degrees. At WOT it ran about 55mph at roughly 5200 rpms. I don't have alot of boating experience but it seemed like it took a long time to get on plane. Would you suggest a change in prop pitch?

Re: 92 Stratos Prop Question?

Max rpm rating is 5,600, the boat is about 1200lbs.ratio is 2.00.1.Motor would be happier at about 5,600. A 23" pitch shoud put you close. Also would improve hole shot.To make result more predictable you should try to stick with same make and model/material.

Re: 92 Stratos Prop Question?

Since I just bought the motor, I do not have a lot of extra money. I will probably look at an aluminum prop for now unless I can trade for another stainless at one of the local shops.

Re: 92 Stratos Prop Question?

a trade may be a great idea..if you can find a shop that has a good used prop that you need. 23 sounds good to me...aluminum will work fine if you cant find a SS..if possible see if anyone has a 21 that they will let you borrow with a deposit..I would like to know what a 3 blade 21 would turn, as yu will also be increasing diameter.

Re: 92 Stratos Prop Question?

for that boat a 25 pitch is too big. like sparkie said go to a 23 pitch. it will give you better holeshot to get on plane faster. bass boats run better with a cupped prop, the more boat out of the water the better the performance. also try trimming the motor up higher keeping a eye on the water pressure.
