My XP 200 is on a 19 foot Astro F/S. At different points in the RPM range this thing pulls to right.
I have adjusted the tab on the lower unit as far as it will go and it has helped the problem by 50% but the more I am into the gas the harder it pulls. What is funny about this problem is that cruising at about 35mph it drives straight, get into the gas and pulls right. Steady the speed at around 45-50 it pulls right slightly but tolerable. The more your in it the harder the pull. I have dropped the motor and it did not help the pulling problem but I did drop nearly 300rpm (I am going to raise the motor back up).
Any other suggestions?

Double check that the motor is mounted on the centerline of the hull. Make sure that transducers and pitots are not causing surface cavitation too close to the prop. Double check that trim tabs (if eqpt) clear the waterline on plane. If there is too much backlash in you steering setup, you may experience torque steer.
Check these out and let us know. Good luck

I really dont understand the backlash in the steering set up. The transducer is @ 2 feet away from the prop.
The motor is mounted in the factory holes but I will take some measurements. I do not have any trim tabs.

If you trim the engine up a bit more will it reduce the pull?Or are you trimmed out as far as possible without ventilation?

There area few sweet spots when trimming. It pulls very hard just after plane. As I trim it the steering becomes easier as long as I stay from 4500rpm to 5000 rpm. At top-end 5000 to 5800rpm 56 to 62 mph it starts pulling really hard again.

A very expected situation on performance hulls. As you found out, adjusting the stock torque tab helps some but not all that much. High pitch props affect it as well as high X dimensions (that tab will be out of the water at some point).

In these cases we use a torque tab on the skeg. You can buy one to add from Bob's Machine (among others) or maybe even here at iboats. I prefer to create one with welding on the skeg. The add-on type will be very sufficient for your rig to start with.

Nothing unusual is going on here at all.

Dhadley, can you provide contact information for Bobs machine shop or where ever else I can find something like this? I have no idea what one would even look like.
Thank You

Sure. 800-966-3493 or www.bobsmachine.com and look for "Torque Tamer". If you call there I'm sure they will be eager to help in any way. Real nice folks, especially Bob.

What prop are you running?

Re: 92' XP 200 pulls right .

The prop is a Viper, 14-3/4 X 21.
The prop looks like it has had some work done on it though. The Blades look awful large and thick, there is also a lot of cup built into it. I know it is very heavy.
I took it to a highly recommended mechanic for a tune up and he said the same thing about the prop. On his lake test he said he got 62 mph at 5400 rpm and the time to plane was right around 3 seconds.Good? He told me I needed to raise the motor another inch which I have already planned to do.

One thing I didnt mention, the prop actually extends beyond the skeg. Maybe 3/4" or so. I dont know if it is supposed to or not.

Re: 92' XP 200 pulls right .

62 is right at 0% slip but regardless thats pretty good even if the speedo is off some. But yes, 5400 is not enough for that motor. Raising the motor will definately help with overall performance. The rev limiter should be at 6700 on that motor so dont be afraid of it.

The Viper is a fairly good prop. Kind of a tweaked SST II and not quite as good as a Raker. As you go up there will be a point that it starts to lose bite where a Raker wont. Or even better yet, a Turbo.

The Viper does have a tendency to lose bite in the turns, I have to use the trim quite a bit in and out of turns or it will just blow out and lose speed.
I dont know that raising the motor (only have an inch left to raise) will get my rpms all the way where they need to be. Surely, I have enough HP to get the 21P prop to 6000 rpm.

I get the feeling you dont have a jackplate. However, I do see one in your future....

Is the gearcase stock or does it have a low water pick up?

No jack plate and the gearcase is stock.
I did have a 6" jack plate given to me but it is only rated for a 150 hp and not to mention the fact that it has been in a fire so I dont think it will be put on my boat.

Good plan! :)

When you talk to Bob ask about his plates. Either manual or hydraulic. Heads up -- once you use the button (a hydraulic plate) nothing else will do. You get spoiled real quick!
