93' 115 johnson Leaking oily water. First let me say the engine has just had 2 new pistons and new rings all 4 cylinders. Less then 1 hour run time on it. I noticed after putting it back together and running it. oil leaking from the 3 little holes Towards the upper leading edge of the lower unit. One hole is directly facing the transom the other 2 aim straight down. I pulled the exhaust housing thinking that was the problem, looked ok. Pulled the heads and found evidence of gasket leaking on both banks, new gaskets also. checked head for warpage, checked ok. reinstalled head and gaskets. Is oil coming from these 3 holes evidence of head gasket leaking? or something else???? HELP.

Did you reinstall the old head gaskets or install new ones? Did you torque the head bolts to specs in the correct sequence (start with the middle bolts & work out in a circular spiral)? I usually do three rounds on the head....ie...if it calls for 20ft lb, I'll start with 10, then 15, and 20. If you reinstalled the old ones, replace them. Once the ring is crushed from torquing, it's not much good as a seal anymore.

A leaking head gasket would give you the oily residue. Also, running dbl oil and on muffs would cause extra unburned oil in the exhaust expecially at idle and low r's.

The holes in the lower unit are cavity drains so no water lays in the lower unit. Keeps it from freezing up in the winter.

After the rebuild i installed new gaskets, I installed the old ones after i found them leaking. I will go ahead and put the new ones back on. I did torque the heads to spec.
I am running double oil right now for the break in.
Question? Lets say the head gaskets are not leaking. If i was mixing dbl oil, is it possible i could still have a little bit of oil out of those 3 little holes?

Yes. You will usually get a little more out of the exhaust running on muffs because the engine isn't working as hard as it would be in the water.

Oily sludge running from the cavity drains is perfectly normal, espacially on initial run after assembly, there will be extra oil everywhere in motor from assembly, and most run on double oil first couple of tanks. What evedience of leaking headgaskets did you see ? I've noticed, when you assemble a motor that has ran rich or oil rich prior to disassembly, the oil in cylinders often creap in at the mating surfaces before you pull them apart, especially at the seam faceng downwards, fooling you to think is was actually leaking. I have the feeling everything is in order. Confirm it by a compression check.
