I have a 93 115 evinrude I purchased use last summer and I'm having a couple of issues. For starters the VRO system has been removed. I was told motor has been sitting a couple of years. The problems;motor will idle fine with muffs on but when motor is submerged in water won't idle. will run in neutral with slight throttle applied. Also Cuts out at Wide Open throttle. I'm thinking carbs are gummed up. Also the tach only works 10% of the time, If I tap on the rectifier with a screw driver it starts to work for a short time. Bad rectifier right? Could rectifier be causing my 1st two problems. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks Bill. P.S. I've found carb kits at **********, does one kit contain enough parts for both carbs.

You will need to buy one carb kit per carb. Make sure you get a kit that will come with a new needle/seat and float. The OEM Johnson/Evinrude kits usually have all of that.

Start with a carb rebuild and tune. Is your tank a remote or permanent tank? If remote try to drain it and make sure there is no varnish inside. Then check your fuel lines for the same thing and for soft spots. When the motor does run with the muffs is the primer bulb soft and sunk in or is it firm? If its sunk in I'd replace the fuel lines as its sucking air. After that I'd decarb and she should run like a bat outta hell.

Also possible the engine is not running on all 4 cyls. That engine will seem to run just fine on 2 or 3 cyls when running on the trailer. Once the lower unit is submerged and is in gear-you need all 4 cyls firing. Weak ignition componetns tend to fail once the engine heats up to normal operating temps. Warm the engine up well, then check for spark on each plugwire with an inductive timing light. The flashes from the gun will tell you a lot about the spark. Yes, it does sound like a bad rectifier. Your engine has the more expensive combination rectfier/regulator. It may not have been recharging the battery properly A new one should cure both your tach and any charging issues.

Hello, bought a nice fishing set up from a local fellow about a year ago. it had sat for over a year. 1989 110 evinrude bubbleback. good compression 3 at 112 1 at 115. spotless engine. all papers from original owner for boat/motor/trailer. EXACTLY SAME TROUBLE you are having. i removed VRO new plug wires all new fuel lines and filters. 1 at tank 1 at engine pulled carbs gum and plugged jets cleaned them, blew out with compressed air(ABOUT 15 psi) engine starts/idles and runs great. complete rebuild with floats needles seats. take your time and you will be pleased with your results.

Due to high water, finally got a chance to get out today. Installed new rectifier and rebuilt carbs. Carbs were clean but floats were set to low. still have a small idle problem but not like it was. Tach worked well. turning 5100/5200 rpm with a GPS speed of 29mph w/17p prop on a 20' tritoon. Thanks again for all the info.
